Before You Buy: The Three Measurements Nobody Takes

Most Indians buy a TV unit by looking at photos and comparing prices. The unit arrives, goes against the wall, and something feels off — the TV sits too high, the unit looks too narrow for the wall, or there isn’t enough storage for what they actually need to store. Three measurements would have prevented all of this.

Measurement 1 — Your seated eye line

Sit on your sofa in your normal watching position. Have someone measure the height from floor to your eye level. That number — typically 40–46 inches for a standard Indian sofa — is where the centre of your TV screen should be. Work backward from there to find what unit height you need depending on whether the TV is wall-mounted or placed directly on the unit.

Measurement 2 — The wall width, not just the unit width

A TV unit should cover 60–80% of the wall width it sits against — not 100%, and not 40%. Below 60%, the unit looks stranded. Above 80%, the room starts feeling enclosed. For a standard Indian living room with a 12-foot TV wall, you’re looking for a unit between 86–115 inches wide. Most off-the-shelf TV units are 48–72 inches — which means many Indians are under-sizing their TV wall and wondering why the room feels bare.

Measurement 3 — Cable and equipment depth

Most TV units are 14–18 inches deep. A router, set-top box, gaming console, and power strip need a minimum of 12 inches of depth to sit inside a closed cabinet. Measure your actual equipment before assuming a unit will accommodate it — then add 2 inches for airflow.

Which Finish for Which Indian Interior?

The Shopps.in TV unit collection offers four primary frame finishes — and the right choice depends on your existing room more than your personal preference in isolation.

Gold / warm gold: Works in rooms with warm marble floors (Botticino, Crema Marfil, Agaria), terracotta or warm-white walls, and incandescent or warm-LED lighting. India’s most popular luxury finish for TV units right now — it photographs well and ages better than most lacquer options.

Rose gold: A softer, more muted warm tone. Suits bedrooms and living rooms with blush, dusty pink, or nude accents. Less dominant than gold — the room around it can do more work.

Chrome / silver: Works with cool-toned interiors — grey or white marble, stainless steel accents, daylight LED lighting. The hardest finish to integrate in traditional Indian interiors but the most contemporary.

Black / matte black: The most graphic choice. Works against white walls, light stone floors, and in rooms with other black accents. Black TV units have the advantage of making the TV itself less visually dominant when switched off — the screen disappears into the frame.

The Indian Living Room TV Wall — Getting the Full Layout Right

The TV unit is one component of a wall that also includes the screen, the lighting (in-built or separate), the styling on the unit’s top surface, and often wall art or a mirror on either side. Getting any one of these wrong makes the whole wall look unfinished.

Start with the unit. Then wall-mount the TV at the right height (centre at 42–46 inches from floor when seated). Add a lamp or LED strip behind the unit for ambient backlight — this reduces eye strain and makes the wall look intentional. Style the unit top simply: one tray, one art object, one plant. Less is more.

If the TV wall has space on either side of the screen, consider metal wall art or a decorative mirror to fill those panels — both available at Shopps.in with free delivery.
